Craig Dory is the Director of the CESMII Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center (SMIC) hosted at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York, a Smart Manufacturing Center of Excellence. He leads the SMIC’s efforts to develop and operate a comprehensive Smart Manufacturing R&D and demonstration facility, create an agile Smart Manufacturing learning environment for students and professionals, and connect manufacturers with a wide range of resources to help accelerate their adoption of Smart Manufacturing technologies and systems. He heads a team that has transformed RPI’s one-of-a-kind, agile manufacturing environment into a nexus for Smart Manufacturing research, demonstration, and education, piloting activities to build a flexible, scalable Smart Manufacturing testbed infrastructure that integrates over 40 manufacturing assets—including both modern and legacy systems—with five industry-standard historians to facilitate the collection and storage of contextualized manufacturing process time-series data. This data powers a variety of high-value manufacturing metrics and analytics, including AI/ML-driven analyses at scale, workflow orchestrations, and model-predictive control. Craig has developed and managed a diverse portfolio of Smart Manufacturing R&D and application projects across multiple industries, resulting in more than $100M in annual cost savings for manufacturers through improved operational efficiencies. He is also a CESMII Certified Smart Manufacturing Roadmap Professional and collaborates with industry partners and NIST MEP Centers on SM-related roadmapping and deployment efforts to help manufacturers take their first and next steps into Smart Manufacturing. During CESMII’s startup phase, Craig served as the institute’s Interim Vice President for Membership, developing a national membership recruitment strategy and leading a team to establish a member recruitment pipeline and sign CESMII's first 100 members. Craig earned a B.S. in Mathematics from Iowa State University and an M.S. in Industrial and Operations Engineering from the University of Michigan.
